This fight made more sense than the main event of the UFC 90: Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote where Silva snatched a victory to retain his title by doing some ballroom dancing against Cote and still won the fight via TKO, Cote suddenly injured his foot in the 3rd round, the crowd booed the fight.

In his previous fight, Alves made 9-time welterweight king Matt Hughes look like he was headed for retirement as Alves demolished him by TKO in round 2.

Alves has envisioned his next opponent Josh Koscheck as "a younger version of Matt Hughes." And while Koscheck is a monster wrestler like Hughes, a more relative comparison than Hughes would be fellow welterweight John Fitch, who handed Alves his last loss at UFC Ultimate Fight Night 5.
